"Impediment" implies emotional and psychological sufferings and our incapability to break through them. Self-sabotage. It might happen to individuals, men, women, even children. It could happen to a group of people, an organization, a country, a nation. It is probably more like an ongoing struggle which we - as individuals and as a group or a nation - have to face at some points in our life.
